...And All That Jazz!

在向日葵教書到現在，國中班一直比較好教，能分享、解釋的東西也比較多。昨天上的reading課課文提到藍調與爵士樂的起源與簡史，為了不讓學生腦筋打結，我只講半段。同時不希望學生只是知道blues和jazz這兩個「單字」，而實際瞭解這兩種音樂的風格，我特地帶了名歌舞劇『芝加哥』的電影原聲帶，讓學生欣賞片中插曲之一的『爵士天堂』（…And All That Jazz）

也許因畢竟還是小六國一的小孩，平日多與搖滾樂和流行歌曲為伍，對於爵士樂還不太能欣賞。但少數幾個女孩聽得很專心，體會也比男孩們多。女孩子畢竟還是比較專注、細心。至於藍調，下週上課再聽。能配合課文和學生有所分享，我自已也很高興，班主任April也很贊同。

同『窈窕淑女』、『真善美』、『國王與我』、『紅磨坊』，『芝加哥』一直是我最喜歡的歌舞劇之一。原本對這部在百老匯演之有年的舞臺劇一無所知，直到2001年底知道被拍成電影後，方才明白整部作品改編自20年代發生在美國的真實刑案，至今人氣未曾下滑。在臺上映隔天就前往觀賞，看後大呼過癮，讚不絕口！社會上抹煞公理正義，黑硬被抹白，人在犯行後舌燦蓮花，譁眾取寵，博取信任同情，以達到成名的私欲。此等名氣僅曇花一現，凌駕雲端卻終將回歸平淡…等現象，在『芝加哥』中自始至尾都遭諷刺。

這座城中，子彈一發，成名在望

『芝加哥』另一使我印象深刻的，是其中幾首令人百聽不厭的插曲。尤其是影片開始時由凱薩琳麗塔瓊斯演唱，樂風活潑中帶頹廢的『爵士天堂』，琨恩拉提法唱的『你給媽媽方便』(When you’re Good to Mama)及瑞妮潔薇格以撩人的風姿，坐在鋼琴上以略帶慵懶的嗓音演唱的『我可愛的另一半』(Funny Honey)。每一首風格獨具，旋律豐富多變，歌詞也寫得漂亮、巧妙。當然，就是翻譯上的一大挑戰。原聲帶隨附的歌詞譯文句句精簡，字字達意。據我的觀察，這幾首曲子的歌詞用字雖淺顯易懂，但多需會意，否則容易被字困住，無法譯出。以下是『爵士天堂』與『你給媽媽方便』的歌詞與譯文，對學習翻譯的我而言是很好的教材，也令我玩味再三，回味無窮。
