The Battle Hymn of the Republic

翻譯電視影集最讓我樂在其中且樂此不疲的原因之一，在於它豐富的教育性。不論何國製作的影集或電影，必定融入該國的文化與風情。【與天使有約】是美國影集，迥異於風行各國，卻僅僅插科打諢，譁眾取寵的其他美國影集。它的內容範嗶相當廣泛，濃厚的福音色彩更使之鶴立雞群。近日我再度從工作中習得新知，此一新知更令我感動不已而案前濺淚！
『共和國戰歌』(Battle Hymn of the Republic)是著名的美國軍歌，其貑歌更為人耳熟能詳。一般人翻唱為「團結團結就是力量…團結是力量」然而基督徒唱出了此曲的原義「榮耀榮耀，哈雷路亞！基督已經得勝！」由於目前工事中的這集有一百人大詩班合唱此曲的內容，因此必須譯出。我心想此曲既然如此有名，網上一定找得到中文譯詞。果然全不費工夫，不但找到，也在該網頁所附的影片檔上，欣賞到美國一海軍合唱團與一女聲合唱團的合唱。甚至讀到此曲的由來。令人驚訝的是，它出自女性之手，是18世紀美國名廢奴論者、詩人、婦女參政主義者茱莉亞‧沃德‧豪爾(Julia Ward Howe)的代表作。
茱莉亞1819年5月27日出生於紐約，祖父是軍人，父親是銀行家。五歲時就失去母親，自幼學習多種語言，說得一口流利的義大利文。1843年她嫁給著名的醫師山繆‧葛德利‧豪爾(Samuel Gridley Howe)
也是知名的麻州柏金斯盲人學院(Perkins Institute for the Blind)創辦人。

此曲原於1855年由威廉‧史戴福（William Steffe）作曲，原為一首靈歌，曲名亦非現今曲名，亍為Canan's Happy Shore或Brothers, Will You Meet Me There?之類。此曲當時就此在美國傳唱，並有多組不同的歌詞。後來，1860年，一名在南北戰爭爆發前曾加入麻州步兵團，名為湯瑪斯‧畢夏（Thomas Bishop）的仁兄，為這曲寫了段流行一時的歌詞，還將曲名取為＜約翰布朗的遺體＞(John Brown's Body)。約韓布朗據傳是一名麻州步兵團的蘇格蘭人。爾後湯瑪斯‧畢夏的兵營在南北戰爭初始時被派至畢盛頓，茱莉亞‧沃德‧豪爾即在此時聽聞此曲及畢夏所寫的歌詞。此時茱莉亞的牧師朋友雅各‧克拉克(James Clarke)建議她為沙場上的戰士們將此曲填入新詞。當夜，在旅館昏黃的燈光中，茱莉亞靈感泉湧，隨即寫下新歌詞，定名＜共和國戰歌＞(The Battle Hymn of the Republic)。

1862年2月，＜共和國戰歌＞首刊在＜太平洋月刊＞(The Atlantic Monthly)首頁上
成為南北戰爭時期流行於戰士間，至今歷久不衰，成為美國各軍種兵士們耳熟能詳的愛國歌曲。由歌詞中鮮明的信仰色彩可看出，茱莉亞‧沃德‧豪爾是為愛主的基督徒，而＜共和國戰歌＞最原始的本質，則是首讚美至高真神的詩歌！全曲由小鼓引出小喇囚前奏，開始由男聲合唱，再漸加入女聲合唱，爾後全曲漸進高潮，慷慨激昂，同仇敵愾的愛國熱忱表達地淋漓盡致，而進行到貑歌時，對至高神的禮讚達到巔峰，如海濤般洶湧澎湃的旋律，雄壯高亢，威震四方，氣勢砣礡，聽得我感動不已，熱淚盈眶，不由得再度對至聖至榮，可頌可畏的上帝肅然起敬！
